President Moon Jae-in, who is making a state visit to Russia, and First Lady Kim Jung-sook visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow today. They laid a wreath at the Tomb in memory of the sacrifices of the Russian people one day before the Day of Remembrance and Mourning on June 22 in honor of those Russians who fell during World War II.
On the front black granite plate of the Tomb are inscriptions, which read "To Those Who Have Fallen for the Motherland 1941-1945" and "Your name is unknown, your deed is immortal." Guards at both sides of the Tomb stand at attention under all circumstances. This place is well known for the guard-changing ceremony taking place every hour on the hour.
An eternal flame is burning on the star-shaped sculpture in the center. Soviet Communist Party General Secretary Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev lighted the flame for the first time on May 8, 1967, and former President Dmitry Medvedev reignited the flame in early 2010 after repair work was done. The flame pays eternal tribute to the patriotism and spirit of numerous unknown soldiers who gave their lives to their country.
