□ Presidential Instruction on Special Envoys
President Moon Jae-in gave an instruction today to send Director of National Security Chung Eui-yong and Chief of National Intelligence Service Suh Hoon to China and Japan, respectively, as special envoys to explain the results of their recent visit to North Korea.
Director Chung will visit China and have a meeting with Director of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission Office Yang Jiechi on September 8. Chief of National Intelligence Service Suh will make a courtesy call on Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on September 10.
□ National Assembly’s Ratification of Panmunjeom Declaration
The Government will submit a bill on the ratification of the Panmunjeom Declaration to the National Assembly after passing it at the Cabinet Meeting next Tuesday. To be tendered at the same time are cost estimates necessary for implementing the Panmunjeom Declaration.
□ Preparations for Inter-Korean Summit
The inter-Korean summit to be held in Pyeongyang is just 11 days away. The inter-Korean summit preparation committee has decided on a slogan and the official title of the summit.
The slogan is “Peace, A New Future,” and the official title is “2018 Inter-Korean Summit Pyeongyang.”
To take place in Pyeongyang 11 years after the 2007 inter-Korean summit, the upcoming summit is meaningful in that President Moon Jae-in's promise to visit Pyeongyang this fall in the Panmunjeom Declaration will be fulfilled.
At a critical juncture when a historic transformation is taking place on the Korean Peninsula, the summit's slogan has embraced the people's desire to open a new future together with the North.
Like that of the first inter-Korean summit this year, the slogan was written with a brush on hwaseonji, Korean traditional mulberry paper. It will be used as a background of various press briefings in Pyeongyang and Seoul as well as in various promotional materials for the Government.
The Situation Room came into operation today, shifting into a preparation mode for the summit. It will monitor the preparations on a daily basis and respond to situations as they occur. Composed of Cheong Wa Dae officials and other officials from related ministries and agencies, it will be headed by Director for the State Affairs Planning Room Yoon Kun-young.
In spite of limited time for the preparations, we will make thoroughgoing preparations in a calm manner to usher in a new future on the Korean Peninsula as all the people wish.
