The President Attends U.N. Global Call to Action Meeting on World Drug Problem
As the first event on his itinerary pertaining to the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Moon Jae-in attended a meeting on the Global Call to Action on the World Drug Problem. Chaired by U.S. President Donald Trump, this event was joined by member states to coordinate a response to the serious global drug problem. They reaffirmed their determination to carry out narcotics-related international conventions.
During the event today, global leaders expressed agreement on four objectives put forth to curtail the demand and supply of drugs, assist addicts with their treatment and enhance international cooperation on drug problems.
Early Monday morning, President Moon and the leaders and top officials from many countries, including the United States, Japan, China, India, Argentina, Colombia, the United Kingdom and Russia, gathered at the U.N. Trusteeship Council’s conference hall on the second floor of U.N. Headquarters. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley opened by delivering her remarks on the agenda of the meeting. Speeches by U.S President Donald Trump and U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres followed.
President Moon sat in the first row, listened to speakers, and asked questions about the interpreted speeches. Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Kyung-wha sat right behind the President.
President Trump sat center stage, flanked on his left by U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton and on his right by U.N. officials, including Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Korea began its role as a member of the U.N. Commission on Narcotic Drugs in 2016, with its membership set to expire in 2019. The country is actively participating in the international community’s efforts to eradicate narcotics.
