President Moon Jae-in and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi held a summit on the sidelines of the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly. During their summit that started at 9:50 this morning, the two presidents engaged in in-depth discussions on the overall aspects of Korea-Egypt relations and regional issues.
President Moon noted that Egypt, under the leadership of President El Sisi who was reelected this March, was taking steps toward peace and stability. He expressed satisfaction that the two countries have advanced mutually beneficial cooperation in a wide range of areas.
President El Sisi gave high marks to Korean businesses operating in Egypt for their contributions to his country’s economic development and reciprocal economic cooperation by expanding the manufacturing base and creating jobs. He went on to express his intention to further accelerate reform in various areas for the rebuilding of Egypt by sharing Korea’s abundant experience in development and education as well as new and renewable energy.
The two Presidents agreed to continue high-level exchanges and regular policy consultations while striving to further develop the comprehensive cooperative partnership between the two nations by expanding the scope of existing cooperation in trade, investment and cultural exchanges to incorporate the areas of national defense and the defense industry.
Requesting the Egyptian Government's continued interest in Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and GS Engineering and Construction and other Korean businesses operating in Egypt, President Moon asked President El Sisi to take a special interest in and provide support for a project where Hyundai Rotem is looking to supply trains for the Cairo Metro. President Moon also asked that his counterpart take interest in and show support for the import of Korean-made weapons currently under discussion, i.e., naval frigates and K9 Thunder, a self-propelled howitzer.
President Moon next explained the recent situation surrounding the Korean Peninsula, including the outcome of the inter-Korean summit held last week, and requested the Egyptian Government to consistently support the South Korean Government's endeavors to achieve complete denuclearization and permanent peace on the Peninsula going forward.
President El Sisi noted the South Korean Government’s leading role in efforts to bring positive changes to the Korean Peninsula recently and expressed unwavering support for its policy toward the North.
The Egyptian President asked President Moon to visit Egypt at the earliest date possible. President Moon responded that in return for President El Sisi’s visit to Korea in March 2016 [during the previous Administration], he would consider a visit to Egypt.
