This afternoon at Cheong Wa Dae, President Moon Jae-in met with U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo. The U.S. Secretary of State arrived in Seoul after having held talks with Chairman of the State Affairs Commission Kim Jong Un in Pyeongyang. During their 40-minute meeting, the Secretary briefed the President about the results of his meeting with Chairman Kim in North Korea. The President and the Secretary exchanged opinions thereafter.
Secretary of State Pompeo said that Chairman Kim and he had reached an agreement to hold a second U.S.-North Korea summit as soon as possible. He went on to say that the two sides had agreed to continue consultations to determine the date and venue.
Noting that there had been discussions concerning the North’s denuclearization measures and monitoring by the U.S. government, Secretary of State Pompeo added that they had exchanged ideas on the corresponding measures the United States will undertake.
Secretary of State Pompeo also said the two sides had agreed to form working-level negotiation teams to have consultations on North Korea’s denuclearization process and the schedule of a U.S.-North Korea summit at the earliest date possible.
President Moon said he was looking forward to the second U.S.-North Korea summit and its great success, adding that his Administration will do everything it can in the process.
