First Lady Kim Jung-sook attended a luncheon hosted by Indian First Lady Savita Kovind. The lunch meeting started at 12:40 pm (local time) and lasted approximately two hours.
The two First Ladies made inquiries about each other’s personal wellbeing after exchanging warm greetings. It was their second meeting following the first in July this year. The First Lady expressed her pleasure upon meeting her Indian counterpart by saying, “I came here determined to make whatever small contribution I can along a path toward prosperity for Korea and India.”
Pointing to the blouse she herself was wearing, Korea’s First Lady said she had had the garment made from a saree that India’s First Lady had given her. She went on to say that the blouse expresses her desire to see Korea and India prosper together. Reiterating her appreciation for the gift, the First Lady of Korea added that she would treasure it.
While meeting with Indian Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj earlier, the First lady had also explained the meaning of the garment, saying that she had had it made with a hope that Koreans would share the philosophy and culture of India and that the two countries would be able to cultivate closer ties.
The First Ladies conversed about bilateral ties and friendly cooperation built through the history and culture of Korea and India. They also had a common understanding that there is unlimited potential in what the two countries can share.
During cultural performances staged over the luncheon, not only Indian traditional music but also Korean songs such as “Arirang” as well as “Fate” and “Beautiful Country” by singer Lee Sun-hee were played with Indian traditional instruments to convey the symbolism of First Lady Kim’s visit to India and long-running special relations between the two countries.
The Indian First Lady invited her daughter and daughter-in-law to the luncheon and introduced her grandchildren to her counterpart, showing her consideration by building friendship and deepening relations amid a familial atmosphere.
