Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Republic of India will make a state visit to Korea February 21-22 at the invitation of President Moon Jae-in.
President Moon and Prime Minister Modi will hold a summit and attend an MOU signing ceremony on February 22. Later in the day, the President will host a state luncheon for the visiting Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Modi will become the first foreign head of state or government to make a state visit to Korea this year. He will visit Korea for the first time in four years since his last in 2015. His visit this time also carries the significance of reciprocating President Moon’s state visit to India last July.
India is home to the world's 2nd largest population (1.35 billion) and the world's 6th largest economy (US$ 2.6 trillion). As such, the country is emerging as a global economic powerhouse with high economic growth rates hovering above 7 percent. In addition, the country is also a key partner of the New Southern Policy, one of the Korean Government’s priorities.
At the upcoming summit, the two leaders are expected to focus their discussions on concrete measures to develop bilateral relations in a more mutually beneficial and forward-looking manner by expanding existing substantive cooperation in trade and investment as well as people-to-people and cultural exchanges into infrastructure, science and technology, space and the defense industry. The two countries have maintained a special strategic partnership based on the friendship and trust built over the past years.
In addition, the two leaders are expected to reaffirm India’s full support for the peace process on the Korean Peninsula, which is being pushed forward by the Korean Government. Building on that, they are also likely to discuss ways to cooperate on bringing peace and prosperity not only to the Korean Peninsula but also to the region and the rest of the international community.
In this connection, the two leaders will have in-depth discussions on how to implement Korea’s New Southern Policy and India’s Act East Policy in concert, the principle of which was agreed upon during President Moon’s state visit to India last July.
