President Moon Jae-in met with former British Prime Minister David Cameron at Cheong Wa Dae this afternoon. During their 35-minute conversation, they discussed ways to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue and measures for cooperation between Korea and the United Kingdom as well as Korea and the European Union.
President Moon noted that he and Prime Minister Cameron shared the same philosophy of fair distribution, improvements in public welfare and the protection of minorities. He continued to say that he intended to step up cooperation with the European Union and the United Kingdom, departing from the diplomacy of the past focusing primarily on the four powers that heavily influence Korea. He also explained his upcoming schedule, saying that, beginning tomorrow, he would meet Chancellor Angela Merkel and many other leaders at the G20 Summit in Germany.
President Moon said that the North fired yet another missile today, still refusing to respond to the initiative for peace on the Korean Peninsula based on its complete denuclearization. The President went on say that if the North crossed the red line by refusing the idea of peaceful denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, which President Trump and he had agreed to, it would be anybody’s guess how we would respond to it.
Expressing his wish that the North would not cross the bridge of no return, President Moon said that China, even though it was playing a part in its own way, needed to play an even bigger role to make it possible to fundamentally resolve the issue.
Prime Minister Cameron said the United Kingdom helped the United States stop Iran’s nuclear armament and a possible war in the negotiations over Iran’s nuclear development. He went on to say that it would be able to make similar contributions to solving the North Korean nuclear issue.
Prime Minister Cameron also said if President Moon talks at the G20 Summit about how to ease tension on the Korean Peninsula and to deal with the horrible North Korean regime, it would have a great influence on many heads of state and government present at the meeting.
