President Moon Jae-in held a meeting with a surviving member of the German medical support group sent to Korea after the Korean War as well as descendants of other members. The 45-minute meeting from 2:15 this afternoon was also attended by officials from the German Red Cross. President Moon expressed profound appreciation to the German medical support group for coming to Korea’s aid in times of difficulty and providing great help with noble dedication and humanitarian devotion.
The German medical support group dispatched a total of 117 medical professionals for about five years from May 1954 to March 1959. Called "West Germany Hospital" in Busan at that time, the support group treated about 250,000 Koreans and helped about 6,000 expectant mothers give birth. They also helped train Korean medical professionals, including nurses, thereby making contributions to the advancement of medicine in Korea.
Today, President Moon personally gave a presidential citation to Karl Hauser, who worked as an engineer of the German medical support group and was now identified as the sole survivor, as an expression of the highest degree of respect and gratitude. The President also invited him and the families of other members to visit Korea.
