President Moon Jae-in, who is currently visiting Hamburg, Germany to attend the G20 Summit, met with U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at 12:40 this afternoon.
President Moon highlighted his commitment to making sustained and persistent efforts to persuade North Korea to comply with a denuclearization pledge and come forward and cooperate with the international community, asking for the Secretary-General’s interest and support in the process. In response, Secretary-General Guterres promised proactive cooperation at the U.N. level to bring about peace on the Korean Peninsula.
In addition, President Moon said he would provide active support to make sure that the Secretary-General`s endeavors yield good results in the international community`s responses to various global challenges. The President also pledged close cooperation to tackle a raft of global issues, including conflict prevention, peace building and climate change.
The first ROK-U.N. discussions since the inauguration of both President Moon and U.N. Secretary-General Guterres were regarded as an opportunity to reaffirm the close cooperative relations between Korea and United Nations.
