President Moon Jae-in greeted President Andrew Parsons of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) at Cheong Wa Dae on Oct. 17, to share his thoughts on the upcoming PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games.
“The government will try to make up for any shortcomings in the preparation process, so as to make the Paralympic Games as successful as possible,” said President Moon.
The IPC president, who was visiting Korea to attend the 9th IPC Project Review meeting in Pyeongchang and to inspect preparations for the PyeongChang Games, said, “I’ve been deeply impressed and satisfied with the preparation in general.”
He said that it’s crucial to create a better training environment for Olympians and, also, to invite as many visitors as possible to the Games, both from at home and abroad, so that they can see in person the Paralympic sporting events. He advised that, “More efforts should be made on promoting the Games, especially boosting sales of Paralympic tickets.”

The two also talked about the possible participation of North Korean athletes in the PyeongChang Games.
“Pyongyang’s engagement in the sporting event is an important factor in the success of the games in order to make it a peaceful and safe Games. The door is open for North Korea to take part in the upcoming Olympics and Paralympics,” said the IPC leader. “Preliminaries still remain for North Korean athletes to win tickets to compete in Pyeongchang, and even if they fail to earn the right, the IPC will discuss the matter with other agencies to find a way,” he said.
In response, President Moon said that the North’s participation means a lot, as it would help to assure the world that the PyeongChang Games can be a peaceful and safe sporting festival, as well as to draw attention from around the world. “I hope the Olympic Games will open the door to peace and unity,” he added.
