World leaders have been sending their congratulatory remarks to Moon Jae-in, Korea’s newly-elected president.
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s statement on May 9 began by saying, “We congratulate President-elect Moon Jae-in.” It continued, “We look forward to working with President-elect Moon to continue to strengthen the alliance between the United States and the Republic of Korea and to deepen the enduring friendship and partnership between our two countries.”
U.S. President Donald Trump personally called President Moon on May 10 to deliver his congratulatory remarks, too.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also congratulated President Moon on May 10.
Xi congratulated the newly elected Korean president and said, “Let us try together to build a stronger relationship between Korea and China.” He also wished for “a more sound and stable partnership between the two countries.”
Abe announced through Japan`s Foreign Office that he wishes "to meet President Moon as soon as possible to exchange opinions on issues of shared interest in a frank manner.”
Putin sent a telegram of congratulations, saying, “Russia praises its constructive relationship with Korea.” He said, “We are ready to collaborate to strengthen ties across various fields and to solve international issues.”
Merkel also congratulated President Moon and expressed her nation`s wish to “continue to deepen the friendly and trusting cooperation between our two countries.” She also said, “I am pleased to welcome President Moon as my guest at the G20 summit in Hamburg in July.”
In his statement, Trudeau said, “Canada and the Republic of Korea enjoy a close relationship based on our strategic partnership, a modern free-trade agreement and common values.” He said, “I look forward to working with President Moon to deepen relations between our two countries.”

Some world leaders delivered their congratulatory messages through social media.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “I warmly congratulate Mr. Moon Jae-in upon his election as President of the Republic of Korea,” in English and in Korean on Twitter. He added, “I look forward to meeting Mr. Moon Jae-in soon and also to working closely as special strategic partners.”
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto also posted a message on Twitter, saying, “Mexico is a partner of President Moon Jae-in.” He said, “We will continue to talk through international meetings.”
