President Moon Jae-in talks to his U.S. counterpart, at Cheong Wa Dae on March 1. (Cheong Wa Dae)
By Sohn JiAe
President Moon Jae-in held a phone call with his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, on March 1. The two leaders had an in-depth discussion about issues related to the inter-Korean relationship that has improved markedly thanks to the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games.
During the 30-minute conversation, President Trump gave some words of congratulations on the success of the PyeongChang Games. In response, President Moon expressed his gratitude to the U.S. leader for having dispatched a delegation to the Opening and Closing ceremonies, including Vice President Mike Pence and White House advisor Ivanka Trump, which he said helped his country host the Games successfully.
The two leaders vowed to sustain the dialogue momentum between South and North Korea that resumed with the PyeongChang Games so that it could lead to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. They also agreed to work together to advance inter-Korean dialogue in the future.
As part of these efforts, President Moon said that his administration would soon dispatch a special envoy to Pyongyang.
