President Moon Jae-in met with U.S. Senator Dick Durbin in Seoul on May 31 and discussed the Korea-U.S. alliance and other issues of common interest.
In regard to North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missile development program, President Moon told the U.S. senator that, “We strongly condemn North Korea’s continued violations of U.N. Security Council resolutions, and we need much stronger sanctions and pressures through cooperation with the international community.”
President Moon said, “We need to put more sanctions and pressure on Pyongyang so that it can come back to the negotiating table, and we would also need to cooperate with China.”
“I understand that President Trump has the same thoughts as I do,” he said.

President Moon said, “The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system was jointly decided upon by Seoul and Washington in order to respond to North Korean nuclear threats.”
“Just as in the U.S., democratic procedures and procedural justifications are strongly required in Korea,” said the president.
“These two procedures were not properly carried out in the decision-making made by the former government, so I believe the U.S. needs to understand this, even if this takes some time,” said President Moon.
Senator Durbin thanked the president for his detailed explanation.
Mentioning the upcoming Korea-U.S. summit, Senator Durbin hoped that President Moon would be able to achieve an outcome that could help develop bilateral relations.
President Moon said, “Depending on the U.S. itinerary, I could pay tribute to and lay a wreath at the War Memorial for Korean War veterans.”
“I will express my deepest respect for the people of the U.S., especially war veterans and those who participated in the Korean War in order to protect the freedom, democracy and security of Korea.”
