August 25 and 26

The unified Korean canoe team won the gold medal in the 500m women’s dragon boat race at the Asian Games 2018 Jakarta-Palembang on Aug. 26. It was the first medal earned by a joint South and North Korean team at an international multi-sports event. The day before, the unified team won bronze in the 200m women’s dragon boat race.

August 18

In the Opening Ceremony of the Asian Games 2018 Jakrata-Palembang, at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, South Korean basketball player Lim Yung-hui and North Korean soccer player Ju Kyong Chol together carried the unified Korea flag. The two Koreas formed a joint team under the name “Korea (COR)” for three sports events: women’s basketball, canoe dragon boat, and rowing.

July 21

North Korea sent a 25-member delegation, including Secretary General to the North Korean Table Tennis Association Ju Jong Chol, to attend the 2018 Korea Open in Daejeon from July 17 to 21. Athletes formed four joint teams. The South’s Jang Woo-jin and the North’s Cha Hyo Sim pair won gold in the mixed double event. The joint men’s doubles team tied with the Chinese team for third place.

July 4 and 5

A series of inter-Korean basketball matches were held in Pyeongyang over two days from July 4 to 5, as agreed upon at the inter-Korean sports meeting on June 18. A 101-member delegation from South Korea, comprising of both government and sporting body representatives and including the Minister of Unification Cho Myoung-Gyon and basketball coach Hur Jae, flew to the North on July 3. On July 4, athletes from the South and the North were combined and divided into a Peace Team and a Prosperity Team. The men’s match finished in a dramatic 102-102 tie with a buzzer ending on the first day. On the second day, a South and a North team competed against each other.

June 28

The two Koreas, the Olympic Council of Asia and the Indonesia Asian Games 2018 Organizing Committee agreed to arrange joint teams for three sporting events -- canoeing, rowing, and women’s basketball -- at the Asian Games 2018 Jakrata-Palembang.

May 4

Taking the suggestion of Ryu Seung-min, the 2004 Olympic table tennis champion and an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member, athletes from the South and the North came together to form a joint team, on the spot, for the World Team Table Tennis Championships in Halmstad, Sweden. The joint team competed against Team Japan in the semi-finals.

April 1 and 3

South Korean Art Troupe held a Concert in Pyeongyang under the title "Spring is Coming." The 190-member South Korean musical and taekwondo delegations arrived in Pyeongyang International Airport on March 31. The South Korean singers performedat the East Pyeongyang Grand Theatre on April 1, and held a joint concert with North Korean performers on March 31 at the Ryugyong Jong Ju Yong Gymnasium in Pyeongyang. It was the first time South Koreans performed in North Korea in 11 years, and the first performance inPyeongyang in 13 years. The South Korea art troupe was formed in 16 years.

May 20

A working-level meeting between South and North Korean art troupes is held at the Panmunjeom Tongil House, to discuss the South Korean art troupe’s concert in Pyeongyang. The meeting was attended by South Korean musician Yun Sang, head of the South Korean delegation, and Director of the Samjiyon Orchestra Hyun Song-wol, who headed the North Korean delegation.

March 5

The Special Delegation to North Korea delivered President Moon Jae-in’s personal letter to Chairman Kim Jong Un. North Korea invited South Korea’s Taekwondo demonstration team and artists to Pyeongyang, to continue the mood of reconciliation and cooperation created by the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

February 9

Pyeongchang also hosted a special exhibition featuring the findings of the Inter-Korea Joint Excavation Project for Manwoldae, Gaeseong, for 27 days.

The two Koreas march together at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games for the first time in 11 years. The unified Korean women's hockey team played together as a united team for the first time at the Olympic Games.

February 8 and 11

On February 6, the 114 members of North Korean Samjiyeon Orchestra arrive at Mukho Port, South Korea, aboard the Mangyeongbong ferry. The orchestra staged concerts at the Gangneung Art Center and the National Theater of Korea on February 8 and 11, respectively.

June 24

North Korea’s taekwondo demonstration team visit South Korea. The team performed a demonstration at the opening and closing ceremonies of the World Taekwondo Championship held in Muju, Jeollabuk-do.

April 7

The South and North Korean women’s soccer teams play a qualification tournament at the 2017 Women’s Soccer Asian Cup in Pyeongyang. This was the first inter-Korean match to be held in Pyeongyang in 27 years.

April 6

The inter-Korean match of the 2017 Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships takes place at the Gangneung Hockey Center.

October 13

South Korea and North Korea hold a Special Exhibition of Artifacts Excavated from Manwoldae, Gaeseong. The exhibitions are held at the National Palace Museum of Korea in Seoul, South Korea, from October 13 to November 6 and at the Goryeo Museum in Gaeseong, North Korea, from October 15 to November 15.

May 15

Starting with the first excavation survey on May 15, a total of 7 joint excavation surveys are conducted until 2015 at Manwoldae, Gaeseong, a palace site from Goryeo which had been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage.

March 31, April 1

The 24th South-North Joint Tree-Planting Event for newlyweds is held.

January 28

South and North Korean athletes march together during the Changchun Asian Winter Games in China. The first South-North joint march took place during the Sydney Summer Olympic Games in 2000.

February 20

The South-North Gyeoremal-keunsajeon Compilation Project takes off, organized by the Joint Compilation Committee. The project was aimed at compiling the vocabulary of the two Koreas based on the South’s Korean Standard Dictionary and the North’s Comprehensive Korean Dictionary. The Joint Committee held a total of 25 meetings, but the project was discontinued in 2016.

November 3

The Yun Isang Unification Concert is held with the participation of South Korean artists from November 3 to 5 in Pyeongyang. It was followed by the Peace and Friendship Concert and the Unification Concert in 1999.

May 2

South Korea’s Little Angels hold a concert in Pyeongyang from May 2 to 12. The South-North Joint Photography Exhibition was held in the same month.

September

South and North Korea exchange Hometown Visiting Groups and artist troupes. The groups crossed Panmunjeom at the same time on September 20, and the artist troupes performed folk music and dance numbers in two concerts at the Pyeongyang Grand Theater in Pyeongyang and the National Theater of Korea in Seoul, respectively.

December 9

On December 9 and 10, the National Theater of Korea in Seoul host the Year-end Unification Traditional Music Concert. South Korean artists were joined by around 30 artists from North Korea, led by Deputy Chairman Sung Dong-chun of North Korea’s Korean Musicians Association.
